24. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT ( INCLUDE SCOPE, SIZE, AND COST)

Project Description and Scope:

The project installed 4,000 linear feet of concrete tunnel, from Harney Way to Talbert Street, via Sunnydale Avenue. Three distinct excavation methods were used in the construction of the tunnel – Earth Pressure Balance TBM ; Micro -tunneling; pipe jacking and jet grouting .

Internally-Braced Excavations

Three internally -braced excavations were constructed on the project:
  • Harney Way Excavation – Constructed at Harney Way, by the 101 Underpass, to launch the TBM;
  • Bayshore Excavation – Constructed at Bayshore/Sunnydale Ave to retrieve the TBM and launch the Micro -tunnel;
  • Talbert Excavation – Constructed at Talbert St to retrieve the Microtunnel.

ASC’s Scope:

Dr. Oyenuga was the Construction Tunnel / Geotechnical / Instrumentation Engineer for the Contractor . He was in charge of the following scope items:
  • All Geotechnical & Tunnel Instrumentation ; inclu ding the three excavations on the project;
  • All Railroad Instrumentation ;
  • Noise & Vibration Monitoring;
  • Pre -construction Survey ;
The tunnel crossed Public and Private property, and Dr. Oyenuga interfaced with the following California Agencies and private property owners :
  • Caltrans);
  • Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) ;
  • The Recology properties ;
  • Norcal Propert y
  • Private home owners along Sunnydale Avenue ;
  • SF MUNI;
  • SFPUC
  • Amtrak /Caltrain’s Bayshore Station; with 72- hr straight tunneling under the station

Challenges and Solutions:

Given the large number of stakeholders, Dr. O yenuga installed over 170 monitoring points on property and infrastructure, such as: the Harney W ay Excavation, the Bayshore Excavation, the Talbert Excavation, 101 freeway and Un derpass, the Recology Properties, SFPUC Property, SFMUNI Property, Bayshore Caltrain Station , UPRR track , Norcal , and private homes along the alignment. All the Geote chnical Instrumentation, Sound Control and Vibration Control and Monitoring of the constructi on and existing structure sat the sit e are being provided with automated, real-time instrumentation, linked to our Web-based Central Server.

Construction Cost: Approximately $60 Million
